Foreign tourist arrivals into India up 4% in January

The number of foreign tourists to India during January 2015 increased 4% to 7.9 lakh, compared to 7.5 lakh tourists who visited he country in January last year.

CHENNAI: The number of foreign tourists to India during January 2015 increased 4% to 7.9 lakh, compared to 7.5 lakh tourists who visited he country in January last year.
Consequently, foreign exchange earnings too went up 4% to Rs 11,529 crore as compared to Rs 11,082 crore earned in January 2014 and Rs 10,785 crore in January 2013, according to data from the ministry of tourism.

The highest number of tourists during the period came from the US which sent 16.35%, followed by the UK which constituted 11.82% of the share. Bangladesh came next with 9.29% and Canada, 4.70%.
Australia, the Russian Federation, France and Germany 3.12% contributed roughly 4% each while Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, China and Korea constituted about 3% each of the entire foreign tourist pie.
New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai saw maximum tourist arrivals, followed by Bangalore, Goa, Haridaspur, Kolkata, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
